Foster Care Licensing – FAQ (Intermountain Centers)

What are the requirements?

To become a licensed foster parent, you must:

Be at least 21 years old
Pass background and fingerprint clearance checks
Provide proof of stable income
Have a safe and adequate living space (including a bed for each child)
Complete required training and home study assessments
Be physically and emotionally able to care for children

Can I be a single foster parent?

Yes. You can be a single foster parent as long as you have a clean background, proof of income, and are willing to make appropriate accommodations in your home.

Can I choose my age parameters?

Yes. We work with you to identify the age range and needs of children that best match your comfort level, experience, and household dynamics.

Foster Care FAQs

What does it mean that we are a faith-based agency?

As a faith-based agency, we partner with Christian families who actively live out their faith in their daily lives. This includes practices such as prayer, family devotion time, and active involvement in a Christian church community.

How long is the licensing process?

The licensing process typically takes a minimum of 4–6 months, depending on how quickly requirements are completed.

Can I choose the age or gender of the child placed in my home?

Yes! You can share your preferences regarding age and gender, and we will work with you to find placements that best fit your family.

What are the basic requirements to begin?

One of the key requirements is the ability to obtain a Level One Fingerprint Clearance Card, along with completing all licensing steps.

Who will be involved with my home once I am licensed?

You can expect:

Monthly visits from your licensing agency for support and guidance
Visits from Department of Child Safety (DCS) specialists
A home inspection (we will help prepare you every step of the way)

If both spouses work, is childcare available?

Yes, childcare assistance is available through approved DCS centers (registration cost are not covered).

Who covers the child’s medical expenses?
Children in foster care are fully covered medically, including behavioral health services through Mercy Care.
